So, costumes. Costuming. At conventions. Yeah, I’ve been known to do it. A few times…or more… 😉
Here’s how it happened. Many years ago (*cough*2003*cough*) I was persuaded to go to my first DragonCon. I had a blast, and started attending each year, but I did not start out doing costumes at all.
Most people first go to cons like I did and say, “Costumes? Please, I’d never wear a costume!”
Then they go, have a blast, see all the fabulous getups, and immediately start making a mental list of all the costumes they want to do.
Well, that’s how it happened for me, and for everyone I’ve talked to about it. There’s just something in the con air, I suppose. You go, you get bit by the costuming bug. That’s just how it is.
My second trip to DCon I was a die-hard Farscape fan & wanted to do an Aeryn Sun costume…alas, I never did do one (I had NO clue how to do any costuming, how to find the costume parts, etc). I did get to meet a lot of the cast that year, though, and loved it:
By 2007 or so, I was a die-hard Battlestar Galactica fan (the reimagined series), and I had connected with other fans online & joined a forum where we could all geek out over the show. Thanks to them, I learned about how to find costume parts (and how to fake others), and so after that, I was ready to finally wear costumes!
This pic is from the 2009 con:
I then found out that some BSG friends were also fans of the super-cheesy movie Starship Troopers, and we decided to do costumes from that, too:
This was so much fun to wear, especially when people actually recognized what movie it was all from! LOL!
Then there was the time I got to wear the flight suit costume & work at the two BSG prop auctions in Los Angeles…but that’s a post for another day. 😉
Oh and then there’s the time when everyone dressed as “pirates” to go to a big pirate party at the con:
Which is actually just an excuse to wear more nutty things & be silly.
So what prompted all of this meandering down memory lane? My return to the con this year means I’ve dragged out all my costumes & am sorting through things & deciding what to take (I’m flying & can only have one suitcase, and need room for my normal clothes & shoes & makeup). And that stirs up all the memories…and of course makes me want to do NEW costumes! Sadly I can’t do the ones I want to do yet, but will be working on them for next year (and documenting here, naturally!).
For this year, though, I can’t decide yet! Ack! #firstworldcongoingproblems
